Receptive Language

Receptive language is a person’s ability to understand spoken and written language. It also extends to the ability to understand visual information such as picture systems and key word signs. This can include following instructions, understanding questions, understanding new vocabulary and processing longer sentences.

Expressive Language

Expressive language is the person’s ability to use language in a functional way to communicate. This can include using words, picture systems or key word signs to communicate. For example, using single words to make a request, forming a sentence in order to answer a question or making a comment about something the person has seen or heard.

We support children to develop their language skills by using programs such as Hanen’s It Takes Two To Talk and More Than Words. We believe in empowering parents to build their child’s language skills. By working closely with families, we can ensure that your child’s language development will continue in all environments.
